The Imation Color Matchprint deal is yet another attempt to salvage some
part of a profitable media business from the jaws of inkjet proofing.
The one objective advantage the software RIP may have is that it uses
the Imation CMM. Since they can't sell me a printer (I already have
everything from Epson 9500 to HP 5000 via several Encads, and a Roland
FJ-500 coming in soon), the deal here in Spain is that the software RIP
is free if you sign up for a truckload of their totally unexceptional
but outrageously expensive paper.
We produce exactly the same results (with our own custom Matchprint
profile as the simulation profile) on two stocks from Ilford that are
either roughly similar in quality but 1/8 the cost, or far superior and
1/3 the cost of the Imation deal.
