PrintOpen 3.x/4.x settings

I am confused on what this setting does:
application / optimization this is available in both 3.x and 4.x version of
PO for the PC.

When I select either the standard, color inkjet, proof special paper, etc. I
do notice that it changes the total ink limit and black limit. Is this all
it does?

My output devices are all linearized via BestColor so I was using 400 total
ink, 100%K. But I am not sure about the optimization setting.

I do fine art reproductions so I am not trying to match a press but match
the original art as best as possible.
Any suggestions?
