CMYK files

I just received several old, untagged CMYK print files from a client who
wants me to output them to a Roland. I converted the CMYK files to my
working space before editing for output to the Roland. Overall the results
were satisfactory but it required a lot of editing. Is there a recommended
workflow to follow when confronted with vintage CMYK files?
