Now if they had screwed up backward compatibility of "standard" file
formats
such as Tiff, EPS, etc. then that would be another story but i don't
think

I just received the file in question.

It is a JPEG file, but it has been corrupted by Fotostation when it tried to write in the file info (caption, copyright, etc.).
Because of the corruption, the file is unreadable by ANY version of Photoshop after 2.0.
ImageViewer and some other programs can open it because they ignore the File Info and Photoshop specific data in the file.
