I'm used to profiling PressReady RIP with my Epson 3000 and Matchbox has
generally done a great job. I have a new ESP 7500 and while I'm
waiting/researching a RIP for it, I'll have to settle for the Epson RGB
driver.
I know one must send an RGB file to the Epson driver or you will get a
double conversion. If I pick "inkjet printer" in Matchbox profiler the
symbol shows it as a cmyk profile. Am I misreading the symbol and
assume matchbox knows that most standard inkjet drivers are RGB? The
only RGB symbol for a printer I can find is for a cmy device which I
would assume is not an appropriate choice for my 7500.

Actually, a long time ago, even though it may seem illogical, we chose "CMY
Printer" in ColorBlind Matchbox and ColorBlind Professional to equal a RGB
printer. I wont go into the logic at this time. "Inkjet printer" refers to a
CMYK device. Here lies the dilema. The 7500 Printer (with standard Epson
Printer driver) is a printer which converts RGB to CMYKLcLm. Based on this we
have an profiling problem. Do we profile it as a rgb device? Because the
driver only accepts rgb data, we have to profile it as a rgb printer. Are you
using the Fiery RIP? In the past, the Fiery would not accept icc profiles. I
believe there has been some modifications to the RIP. You may also consider a
third part RIP that is more icc friendly. It really depends upon your
application and throughput. PressReady works well because it is designed to
work with icc profiles and the EPSON 3000 is an actual 4 color CMYK device.
Six color is an issue because "is it really six color"? For some people in the
printing industry, six color is six plates. It is a real head ache. A six
color profile is very different than a 4 color profile. I have inspected lots
of default profiles for various machines and they are not six color profiles,
but are four color profiles. Also, some RIPs are suited for a non-proprietary
icc workflow and some are not even close. Its best to think out your solution
clearly and align yourself with a good systems integrator who can steer you in
the right direction.
