Does anyone know of any good reference material on 4+ color offset printing.
I have a customer who is looking to extend the range of their 6 color offset
press to hit a variety of colors for very specialized work they do. I know
about hexachrome, and perhaps that is the easiest path to take, but I want
to see what other possibilities exist.
There are obviously a lot of considerations here as whatever we come up with
would need to involve a digital proofer capable of proofing the color (this
printer is exclusively CTP) as well as software to generate the separations.
Luckily, this work is all flat colors so I am imaging a scheme where I read
the patches with a spectrophotometer and then feed the Lab values through
some software to come up with CMYK+?? values. Again, it would need to be
proofed on some type of digital proofer, so perhaps I should start there
(with a Roland printer or something) and try to work it out backwards to to
see if we could simulate the proofer with the press. I realize this seems
backwards, but since I have little control over what proofing combinations
are available I'm thinking I should start there.
I understand that this isn't exactly a mainstream topic, so if someone wants
to contact me offline that would be fine. I'm almost certain that somewhere
on this list is another color geek who likes this kind of challenge. Thanks
in advance-
