My last message on this software was "If you ain't got it ,get it!". Now it's, why couldn't I have gotten it earlier.
Pressmaster was originally designed to help in the pressroom to obtain better proof to press match by suggesting density moves. Which, i guess
it does wonderfully. My first look at it was, okay it's neat, but not cool. Then Jim Burns and Brian Ferry from Southwest Software came back and said, "look what it does now." They showed me how I could use the new
Pressmaster to help dial in my digital proofer to a better color match.
The program is ICC based, It evaluated your target proof profile ( in my case waterproof) which it uses to make suggestions. The next step, I measured the target areas on my proof to setup the target definition. I then
measure my polaproof and the software makes dot gain recommendations on how to get a closer match. I put those recommendations into my HQ rip and as Otis Reading sang "Wham Bamma Lamma", I was within 2 delta E of my
Waterproof. After another go around with the software, I was within 1 delta E.
Anyone thinking of doing a digital proofer install, this software can save you time and money. Instead of weeks tuning in a digital proofer, it'll only takes hours. I haven't been this impressed with a software package since
I first saw ICC profiles work. I can now use the same software to track proof to proof consistency by Delta E instead of dot gain. Now when a discussion come up about the accuracy of my proof, I've got Delta E values, end of
discussion. And if I have a significant hue change in donors I'll get a instant feedback on what has change. Much better than dot gain and density. If I have one complaint, it's that it has to many tools in it. Many times
I've opened the wrong tool and realized that's not what I wanted.
Some of you might wonder if I'm a sales person for Southwest. In no way am I connected to Southwest other than a customer/vendor relationship. I felt that when a software program does as much as this one does, I had an
obligation to tell the list about what I had found.
