The RIPs I use for LF printing offer curves (global and individual) both
before and after ICC color management. The former will modify the values
that go into the ICC color engine (for which I have as yet found no
use), and the latter modify the output from the color engine prior to
sending to the printer. Many RL uses of this feature are essentially a
quick fix prior to applying the same modification to the ICC profile,
e.g. in CB Edit. There are, however, two uses that I make (one always
and essential, the other sometimes and trivial) on a permanent basis:
(1) Linearization.
I do my first-line linearization on the RIP and leave it in the post-ICC
curves. These thus become part of the "printer" that I am going to profile.
(2) Paper White.
Sometimes my profiler picks up a little something where it should only
have seen paper, and it outputs 1-1-1-0 or similar, instead of nothing.
I clip it in the individual channels' post-ICC curves (although it
wouldn't cost me any trouble to do so in a new profile based on the same measurements).

You can't always want what you get.
