I was reading the Documentation and found the option to set my monitor to
paper white in the Profilemaker Measure tool. It seems a great idea, since
we run on newsprint.
It's one of those things you have to do with applications that don't
work the way they should, but that you don't want to do otherwise.
In a softproof there is are two transforms, as David explained.
a. Capture RGB (CIELab) production CMYK
b. Production CMYK (CIELab) proofer CMYK and production CMYK (CIELab)
monitor RGB.
ColorSync up to version 2.6 supported (a) but didn't allow rendering
intents to be toggled to support (b), as you can see described in the
GretagMacbeth 'PostScriptum on Color Management' referred to in the
ProfileMaker PDF documentation.
Applications released / engineered pre-ColorSync 2.6 either must have
their own profile handling or can't softproof / proof print.
So if your application / ColorSync combination don't work, you must
edit the monitor profile to softproof, and edit the proofer profile
to proof print (by changing the default rendering intent in the
proofer profile to Relative Colorimetric or Absolute Colorimetric).
Doing this means that you have to maintain one set of profiles for
broken applications / ColorSync versions, and another set of profiles
for non-broken applications / ColorSync versions.
This means that if you have two applications open on the monitor at
the same time, and one handles intents right while the other doesn't,
then you can't edit the monitor profile as that affects both
applications, say Linocolor 6 and Photoshop 5.
Adobe has upgraded its applications so that Photoshop 6 , Illustrator
9 and InDesign 1.5 work. Use these applications with fully ICC
compatible capture tools instead of hacking broken legacy software.
And watch out for RIPs -:).
