I divide targets into narrow strips for trim edge printing regularly. Of
course this gets a sllightly less representative sample that a full width set
of targets, but if you can get ones from each margin, and perhaps one from a
crosswise trim margin, then that is very reasonable. ProfilerPRO and a
SpectroCam allow the target strips to be quite small and narrow. X-Rite has a
new device called the SpectroFiler (with a five digit price tag) that does
this nicely as well. All a matter of price and convenience...
