I have no idea what the answer is but I recently encountered a similar
situation and was curious "why?". I built a profile for an Epson 1270 on
PressReady through both CompassProfile and ColorSynergy. ColorSynergy has a
feature where it will automatically determine the optimum total ink. It
figured that value at something like 220. The profile built by ColorSynergy
did not look great. When I built the same profile in CompassProfile I just
pulled a value of 280 out of the air for total ink. The resulting profiles
print beautifully. However I notice when reading the values of a file
converted through that profile that total ink never gets anywhere near 280.
A 0/0/0 patch separates to something like 220 total ink... very close to the
value that ColorSynergy set as optimum. I have no complaints about the
quality of the CompassProfile profile (quite the opposite) but still I'm
curious why it works that way.
