If it's showing up in the list then it's not nonexistent. So the question
is, where is it? It sounds to me like it's there, but you don't think it's
there. It's possible that the file name is not the same as the
description...the file name is obviously the file name in the Finder, the
description is what shows up in the ColorSync control panel and the list of
profiles in the Monitors control panel. So if the the description is "my
profile" and the file name is "229300.icc", then you won't see any file
named "my profile" in the ColorSync profiles folder.
It's also possible that the profile isn't in the profiles folder, but it may
be in a folder that has an alias in the profiles folder. If there are any
folder aliases in your profiles folder, open the aliases and look in there.

This part especially makes me think that the one you think is the "older
nonexistent profile" is really the right one.
In the ColorSync control panel, in any of the popups, if you hold the cursor
over a profile name a little balloon will appear showing the filename, but
only if the file name is different than the description name. So if you
select some of the profiles in your popup lists you can tell which ones are
where.
