It would help if we knew whether you're using a Mac or PC.
On a PC you can just change the 3 letter extention to others to find out
just what format those files ARE in. Try PSD, EPS, JPG and BMP in that
order. Since you say that you did the scanning and the naming, I'm at a
a loss as to what could have gone wrong (with a PC).
If they're Mac files then maybe the Creator tag has somehow gotten
messed up, though I've never seen this happen unless someone
intentionally changes the Creator using a tool like ResEdit and uses the
wrong settings. A dumb question...but did you try dragging the file on top
of the Photoshop icon (in the case of a Mac)?
