Dear List
In the last months, I head a lot of discussions with german users,
vendors and consultants, how to make colormanagement more simple and
save.
One of the main ideas is an organisation for
colormanagement-certification on different levels:
1. colormanagement integration on OS-Level
2. colormanagement integration in the applications
3. quality-control for profiling applications and measuring instruments
4. quality control for standard-hardware for input and output with
standard-profiles
From point 2 and 4, Apple would be the ideal company. Apple would
specify
(test)-criteria for applications, devices and standard-profiles. E.G
1. A RGB-workingspace is choosable and set by default at OS-Level
(instead, also an
CMYK-workingspace should be choosable)
2. All Input-solutions must be able to transform the input-data to the
system
rgb-workingspace with icc-profiles
2a. All input-solutions must have the possibilty to use individual
input-profiles
instead standard input-profiles
2b. Alle input-solutions must proper use a monitor-profile
3. All editing and layout-applications must use the system
rgb-workingspace
2a. All edinting and layout-applications must proper use a
monitor-profile
4. All printer-drivers must do an conversion from the system
rgb-workingspace to the
output-workingspace
4b All printer-drivers must have the possibilty to automatically match
media-settings
with a output-profile
4a. All printer-drivers must have the possibility to use individual
output-profiles
instead standard-output-profiles. The individual output-profiles must
automatically match
the media-settings
For certifying input-solutions, Apple delivers testcharts, a software to
compare scans
or digital photos from the chart with reference-values and criteria for
a positive
certification.
For certifying output-solutions, Apple delivers testfiles, rules for
measure
printouts of the the testchart and criteria for a positive
certification. An
output-certification is given only to compination of printer, media and
standard-profile. Each new combination of printer and media needs an
extra
certification.
For using the ColorSync-Certification-Logo, the third-party vendor has
to pay an fee
to Apple.
The result would be a dramatically improvement of usabilaty of
colormanagement for
the endusers. The only thing the enduser has to do, is to choose
certified
input-solutions, working-applications and printing solutions and the
right
rgb-working-space on system-level. If Apple would deliver Adobe-RGB as
default-working
for the graphic-arts, the user can use the default in almost all cases.
This system would be easy as sRGB under Windows and open like the actual
ColorSync-Technology. The User can start out of the box with
standard-profiles in his workflow, can upgrade to individual profiles by
a service, a consultant or by a profiling solution.
For anybody, who says, that such project is not possible for an OS-based
company:
Microsoft has integrated such color-certification for input- and
output-devices in
their wider certification process to get the windows-hardware
compatibily-logo for
third-party vendors. The vendors have to pay for this certification, and
they pay !!
The windows-certification is based on a hardwired sRGB-Workingspace with
standard-profiles.
The above described certification is open to individual workingspaces
and individual
device-profiles but includes a default workingspace and
standard-device-profiles.
If any of the members in this list thinks, that it makes sense to push
and help
Apple to go into this direction: give a comment at the list and contact
me offline if you wish.
