The Mitsubishi's seem to be the preferred calibrate-it-yourself monitor at
the moment...

You are considering getting an LCD for serious color work? They are great for
most everything else, but even a cheap CRT offers better color control... the
Spyder is not yet optimized for LCDs, though some more expensive solutions
are available. If you mean the old 17 inch CRT from Apple (no longer beng
manufactured), that is an acceptable machine, but offers no direct gun
balancing at the front pane; though its internal balancing, along with a
Spyder built profile, is a reasonable solution.
