Linux does not yet offer developers a standard way to control the hardware gamma lut. That makes Linux an unattractive platform for the manufacturers of software like ColorSynergy and Optical, because there's no way to support a wide variety of graphics card configurations.
However in a "closed" environment such as the studio where I work, we are able to limit ourselves to a few graphics cards and write custom software to support just those cards. That's the approach we've taken. Unfortunately, our solution is not open source (not yet, anyway).
Quite a few open source projects do exist. Many of them target primarily developers and researchers, and are not yet suitable for end users. Others do not take a whole system approach, but only solve a particular problem such as scanner calibration.
