Even on older Mac systems (pre PowerMac) I found that almost every time I
measured a non calibrated system, it measured closer to 2.2. The system
gamma (I think?) would be a combination of the video card and the monitor
brightness/contrast settings. Absent any kind of formal calibration, most
users of these Mac would adjust brightness and contrast to taste and it
seems that more often than not, the result of the whole system would be
closer to 2.2 than 1.8. The number of Macs actually running at 1.8 is only
a fraction of the total; and Macs in general are only a small portion of the
web browsing community. Hence my logic for assuming that the vast majority
of users, especially today, are viewing web browsers with monitors that come
pretty close to the sRGB space. Its the closest thing we've got to a
standard for web viewing and in my experience it works pretty well across a
variety of systems.
