iMac monitor calibration

I've just got a brand new iMac SE. I can't calibrate the monitor. When going through the Colorsync calibration, the luminosity is never high enough to get anything else that the black square (i.e. the ellipse on the 2 rectangles never gets visible.)

Am I missing something or is there something wrong with the computer?
