I'm neck deep at the moment trying to profile an Epson 5500 using the
BESTColor PC version. So far, it's not a very pretty picture at all. I'm
getting severe banding/posterization especially in fleshtones. I started
with BESTColor's supplied profiles which looked bad and then started
building my own. At BESTColor's suggestion, I started out using it at
1440dpi. I'm at a point now where I'm simply bagging 1440 and going with
720dpi which gives me much more acceptable results although at the expense
of slightly reduced color gamut.
For what it's worth, I think at least a part of the problem is the extremely
low total ink limit you need to 1440 (in the 130-140% range). When I switch
to 720dpi, I'm in the more "normal" range of 160-180%. The 5500 also seems
to require much more black in the profile (lower K start point and more
GCR).
Anybody that's getting the BESTColor RIP to work with the 5500 care to
share?
Terry
