I just can't help myself from making it better. I just feel
I am smarter than any scanner profile.
It is important to think of a scanner profile as a base line. Each
scanner has its own little color variations, that if dealt with up
front, can be eliminated. It does not stop you from improving your
scans, it makes it easier by eliminating those variations. The profiling
process deals with (hopefully) hundreds of colors dynamically with far
greater precision then the brain and eye are capable of. Second I would
suggest that most scanner software is not the place to do those critical
color adjustments. While scanning I try to get the best neutrals, white,
black and overall contrast and not worry about the color. The profile
will (if made correctly) fix most of the color habits of the scanner
and film combination, then I will fine tune the file in Pshop or
Colorblind edit where the tools are more precise.
