Atmittedly Epson drivers and current RGB profiles do an amazing job, but they
are still less controlled than a good RIP and a good CMYK profile.

That would be the most likely justification, but wide format inkjets often
are RIPped for advnaced alyout control, ink limit control and other
non-proofing reasons.

Unless you own a professionaly caliber RIP with true CMYK control, and goood
profile creation software with full CMYK feature control, and possibly a
spectrophotometer, then yes, this would be the case. But it is not the
universal case, or the best method, just the best easy, cheap method.
