We've done some experimenting with the different color engines in photoshop-adobe, apple and heidelberg. Based on these tests we found heidelberg and apple very similar and desireable over adobe (opposite of what we previously thought). This is when converting from RGB to CMYK. Heidelberg is our preference for this conversion with one problem so far: If one is to convert back-from RGB to CMYK to RGB, the heidelberg engine isn't good but the apple is very good.
Example: taking two grey scales and doing the above mentioned test, one with apple and one with heidelberg, the numbers looked like this:
Original: R 245 153 71 10
G 245 153 71 10
B 245 153 71 10
Apple: 247 153 71 8
247 154 71 8
247 154 71 8
Hd: 244 154 70 1
246 157 72 1
246 158 73 3
But, if we convert from RGB to CMYK using heidelberg and then back to RGB using apple, the numbers once again look good:
R 247 153 71 8
G 247 154 71 8
B 247 154 71 8
Question 1.: Has anyone else done tests, and if so your results?
2. Are we simply producing dead-end profiles with heidelberg?
3. Is there a way to tell which engine was used to convert a file if it's tagged?
