I am in Polaroid hell at the moment.
Don't know if you people have ever taken a close look at Polaroid? The dyes
are incredibly dependent on the illuminant -- much more so than a normal
photographic print or digital proof.
We need to get some exact matches to Polaroid colours -- this is the pro
10x8 Polaroid, scanning to RGB.
Problems:
1. The worst illuminant to view a Polaroid in is fluorescent. The Polaroids
practically glow with a red warmth in this light.
Unfortunately our scanner light source is fluorescent. Although the colour
temperature is usually cool and controlled, we still get a warmer than
expected result from the Polaroids.
How can I get around this? And has anybody here already encountered and/or
solved this problem?
I am supposing that Polaroid don't make an IT8 target -- if they did, I
would buy one right now. I am able to build custom RGB curves to alter the
colours during scanning -- but I don't think a couple of simple curves will
give me the accuracy that I need.
2. The final problem is viewing conditions... We get the perfect match in
the booth and then hand out Fujis or a Cromalin to the client. They open the
envelope in their under their office fluorescents and say "that's not a very
good match is it"...
Hopefully some kind list member can e-mail me a copy of their college thesis
on Polaroid dye chemistry in the next hour or so :-)
I've got to get 17 of the bastard things to scan and proof for first thing
in the morning...
