I asked about monitor and printer profiling software a while back and
received several helpful suggestions. In the end, I bought Colorvision's
Photocal and Profiler RGB, along with the monitor spyder.
Photocal did a fine job of calibrating my monitor, it was easy and straight
forward. Profiler RGB, after downloading the update...why did they send me
a CD with the old software!....and using the new target, I built a "good"
profile on the third try. (Epson ink on Epson Archival Matte) The first
profile was much better than using the Epson set up, which gives be red,
over saturated colors. The second try, I took out 5 green, the third, only
3 green. (Yes, you can see 2 points of color in the print)
I have been using 11X17" paper and using Photoshop's "print options" box to
move a 3X5" image around. I just make notes on the sheet in pencil as to
what was done and the name I have given that profile. I have all my choices
for a given ink/paper combination on the same sheet for easy comparison.
Want to see just one at a time?...use a cropping guide.
I am using an Epson 1640 SU Photo to scan the target. For grins, I tried
using an old Umax and the profile was off, so I would guess it pays to use a
good (newer?) scanner. I also had trouble using the spyder with the USB bus
on my Mac key board, but Photocal would stall on me while profiling the
monitor. I just plugged it into the AC powered USB bus my printers use and
I have had no more problems.
There was a bit of correspondence between CD Tobie and a gentleman from
Monaco as the result of Mr. Tobie's reply to my post. I can say nothing
about Monaco, good or bad. However, for me at least, the Colorvision
products have worked as advertised, with little fuss or trouble.
