Knowing when to quit

There have been some questions posted lately on defining ink limits and how
to know when enough is enough. I too am having a similar problem. While
doing a base linearization for my Bestcolor rip I notice that frequently the
denser patches show an increased density for each step but frequently the
increase may only be .01 for several steps before the density value repeats.
What density chnage is reasonable before you decide you've reached the ink
limit for that channel? Certainly there has to be a degree of variability
here that needs to be taken into account. Or do you continue to consider
the step valid as long as the density value does increase, no matter how
insignificant the change.
I have also noticed with the Bestcolor when I finally get to do a printer
linearization, a slight decrease in some of the individual ink limits can
cause the calculated density value to jump up considerably. Only through
substantially lowering the ink percentages do you get the calculated values
down to where they are supposed to be. Have any other Bestcolor users
experienced this? Other than this little quirk everything seems to work
great.
