Proofing page layouts

Dear Friends,
I'll try this once again. I'm trying to figure out how best to proof my page layouts in a ColorSync workflow. I've tried two software packages: old Birmy PowerRIP, and Epson Stylus RIP, neither of which simulates Postscript overprinting, and are therefore worthless to me. (Perhaps I should be asking this question in a different forum, geared more towards my level of ignorance?)

Epson Stylus RIP 4.1 for Mac won't simulate Postscript overprinting.
Stylescript for Mac won't simulate Postscript overprinting.
Adobe PressReady is more or less discontinued: it won't be updated for my outdated Epson 1520.
BestColorDE costs $750 and requires a dongle. (I can't afford it.)
iProof PowerRIP 2000 costs $250 and I think requires a dongle. (I can almost afford it.)

Is that it? Are there others I've missed? Thanks.
Any comparisons between these or recommendations would be appreciated
