While a target with a strong color cast may indeed indicate a problem, I
would say this is not _necessarily_ so. The important thing is that the
measurements found in the reference file accurately represent the actual
colors of your target. If this is true, then even if the grayscale has a
slight color cast, the profiling software should still be able to make a
good profile because the reference file measurements will also show this
same cast.

How do you know if your reference file contains accurate measurements of
_your_ target? Make your own reference file (some profiling packages allow
you to do this).
