That's been my experience too with several digital cameras. The entire
process of profiling these cameras is still not something I feel is well
defined. But most of the time, if the software allows a gray balance option
or allows the user to turn off any "auto processing" (the kiss of death for
any device we profile), the use of a profile can be very beneficial. There
are still a lot of issues involved with shooting the MacBeth ColorChecker DC
that I'm not sure about (use gloss patches?, don't allow the software to use
gray surround?, shoot very flat even if the subject isn't going to be shot
that way?). There's a lot of testing to be done. But I think we are on the
right track thanks to some new software products (InCamera, ProfileMaker
Pro, CompassCamera) and the new ColorChecker DC.

I think it's probably very important to have the Colorchecker DC lit evenly.
The question is, after doing so, can you still use the profile if you alter
the angle of your lights? I just haven't had the chance to do this on
location so I'm not sure. But I am pretty sure that you don't want the
target to be anything but lit flat to build a profile (that alone could make
profiling difficult I agree). A very nice feature in Colorsynergy's InCamera
module is the ability to view the evenness of the illumination of the
target.
