I got to use the ICC DCam camera profiling application today from Profile
City on a Nikon D1 and the results were impressive. The product works inside
of Adobe Photoshop (basically just like their ICC Scan product). Most
impressive was that we used the resulting profile in a number of lighting
situations and in each case, we got vastly superior color results compared
to no profile with an assumed ColorMatch RGB space. This isn't to say that
making a custom profile for each situation tested wouldn't be better. But
there was no downside to using the profile in different settings and it was
certainly better than no profile. We didn't have the Nikon Capture software
so all the tests were done on Tiff and JPEG files (rather than raw 12 bit
files). Anyway, the D-Cam software was very simple and effective. I liked
how the product allows precise control over cropping of the target by
indicating the correct placement with white squares over each patch on the
ColorChecker DC. We had on tiny area of a patch that was covered by the
models finger. In the preview in D-Cam, we noticed that a red squared
appeared (indicating that the software wasn't happy that it was missing a
patch). We actually cloned a bit of the square just next to the finger in
Photoshop rather than reshoot. Now D-Cam was indicating it was getting the
data it needed when the square over the patch was white. Pretty slick!
