Will has covered this pretty thoroughly... but I do have one more thought. Be
sure you do not have a light source raking the monitor screen from a lamp or
other source. Such a low angle light can get reflected between the front and
back coatings of the screen, and bounce in behind the monitor calibrator,
causing misreadings with any type of calibrator.
