lets you modify the neutral gray composition. I wonder if it pulls the
whole profile around
The graybalance adjustment is calculated into the 3D table from Lab
to CMYK. You will not change the more saturated colors with these
corrections. It's like a selective color correction but only for
neutral and un-saturated colors. It's a CMYK UI because there are
still folks who feel most comfortable with that.
While we're on the subject, the global color corrections are simply
CMYK gradations stored in the 1D output tables. You shouldn't make
very large corrections here as you will disturb the graybalance.
This business of what you use the curves for and what you use the 3D
tables for is complicated and nobody has quite the same approach. The
way Printopen tackles it, the smoothing that is to some extent
applied even if you disable smoothing in the Settings dialog prior to
calculating the profile optimizes the data before it goes into the 3D
tables for gamut mapping. There are situations where you want to
disable smoothing. For instance, if you have a high precision inkjet
proofing device. So if you pick one of the presets for inkjet
proofers and do a 16 bit profile then smoothing is disabled.
