The matrix for Distiller 5 with regard to embedded CIEBased color
space specifications from Photoshop 6, and with the default Press
setting that uses 'Leave Colors Unchanged' is like so:
CMYK
TagICC TagPSCM in PS6 = ICCBased
TagICC UntagPSCM in PS6 = DeviceCMYK
UntagICC TagPSCM in PS6 = ICCBased
UntagICC UntagPSCM in PS6 = DeviceCMYK
RGB
TagICC TagPSCM in PS6 = ICCBased
TagICC UntagPSCM in PS6 = DeviceRGB
UntagICC TagPSCM in PS6 = ICCBased
UntagICC UntagPSCM in PS6 = DeviceRGB
This means that Distiller 5 says, "Please, I'm just a PostScript RIP,
and I can't help you with incoming ICC color space specifications,
but I will convert incoming PostScript color space specifications
into ICC color space specifications as best I can."
There are refinements on this theme, I'm sure, but the new behaviour
is clear enough.
I think this behaviour is as good as might be hoped for, and some
folks within Adobe deserve thanks for making this change towards more
open and industry standard technology.
