I work for a company with our roots firmly cast in the prepress environment.
However some 4-5 years ago the writing on the wall about the shrinking of
our skills and prepress industry prompted us to diversified becoming
involved in multi media and Web development. Today we create and author
Multi media CD-ROMs, pre press and printing in the usual manner, with Web
site design and building coupled to hosting the sites that we build as
additional services to our client base.
The issue we now face is how we capture and manage the picture and digital
assets for our clients.
There is sufficient argument in favor of RGB image workflows. Having said
this, I am keen to hear form anyone that has had experience with setting up
in house scanning and retouching and the adoption of RGB image workflows.
Having no experience on the following topic, I am looking for all the help
that I can get.
I understand the theory of the process in broad terms as follows.
1. To capture scans in as wide an RGB gamut as possible.
2. Store these scans/images with any adjustment layers that may be used to
retouch and change the color locally or globally as a master file.
3. Then convert this file to CMYK using ICC profiles to suit the resultant
print process, or to RBG for web production if required.
What pitfalls are we likely to encounter? What tools do we need to set up
profiles for monitors, printers and scanners? How is Color management
handled downstream in the prepress process? Do we rely on RIPs to convert
RGB to CMYK?
Any help in this area is going to be of great help and appreciated as we
research all the pros and cons in this type of workflow ahead of moving
towards implementation.
Thanks for all the help in advance.
