We are using ColorBurst RIPs on several large format printers (2 60"
Encads and a LightJet 5000) that color manage at the object level. That
is, we can set different rendering intents and default profiles for CMYK
and RGB images, CMYK and RGB vector art, and greyscale images and
vector. Embedded profiles are honored. These are then converted to the
printer's destination profile. Included is the licensed library from
Praxisoft for Pantone colors (we also use their excellent Autoflow for
other color managed workflows). The RIP is from Compatible Systems
(
http://www.compatsys.com). This is a superior solution compared to some
other RIPs that color manage at the document level only (the entire
document has a single source and rendering intent).
We can take a standard Postscript or PDF file and purpose the same file
for RGB LightJet or CMYK Encad inkjet. This really simplifies the
workflow, as many clients want to see a test on both media.
Not as cheap as Photoshop, but offers much more flexibility.
