On my website you will find a PDF file in the Documents section entitled
"Color Accurate Photography of Artworks". In it is an explanation of why film
and some digital sensors do not render some artists' pigments correctly and
how to correct the problem with digital photography.
Briefly, the issue is 'observer metamerism' and with the proper filtration the
problem pigments can be tamed. The filtration often reduces the chroma of some
other pigments, so a second step of applying a profile to the image can
correct these pigments back to their proper values. The result is that you can
get very accurate reproduction.
