The rotate will tend to fill in a 16bit histogram. I have a feeling
you may be importing "padded" 12bit image files. Realize, as such,
most of the histogram is empty, only 4096 values in a histogram with
65k values. When you rotate, all of the values will tend to be filled
in with new values calculated by a rotate ... especially an arbitrary
rotate.
(It is a trick often used to fill in a 8bit=>16bit converted image
... but image softening does occur)
