David:
I finished the testing of the 3000. Basically these tests reconfirm my
belief that the 3000 can be considered and profiled as a CMYK composite
printer when driven via the stylus RIP and an older (8.3.1) version of the
Laserwriter driver. It may be important to set up the Laserwriter driver
properly. I did not use the default settings, but made sure to use
color/grayscale, CMYK simulation off etc. etc.
I ran a series of CMYK ramps (CMYK Tiff file) through both the stylus RIP
and the 3000 quickdraw driver and the results reconfirm what I mentioned in
my earlier post - Black contamination in the quickdraw ramps - none in the
PS ramps.
Zeroing one ramp (I chose Magenta) and printing via PS RIP has no effect on
the other two colors (indicating no 4 channel to 3 channel conversion)
whereas there is a definate shift in the quickdraw print, as would be
expected.
I also printed a test image separated with different ink limits and achieved
predictable results.
You can copy and paste each individual channel to the K channel, zero the
others and get four plates. I tried that a while ago.
If it walks like a duck, flies like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a
duck as far as I'm concerned. Maybe I shouldn't have called it a CMYK device
but a DUCK device. Whatever - you can talk to it directly with four
channels.
I suspect the QuickDraw driver is activating printer firmwear differently
than the RIP. I have been lead to believe that some printers will allow a
RIP to bypass printer firmwear and issue draw commands directly to the print
heads themselves. My testing had led me to believe that was the case with
the Epson 3000 but was no longer true of the newer 6 color models.
This was exactly what I experienced with the Epson 5000/Fiery and I made the
assumption it was true for all six color printers. After all, if it was
possible why wouldn't EFI do it? Others claim they have, so now I have to go
out and prove it for myself.
I would be happy to send these printed samples on to you if you like. Just
e-mail me your shipping address and they will be on their way.
Best wishes,
Nick Wheeler
