I'm a small design studio, and feel like its time to check if the
workflow I've built (based on info from this list over the last
couple of years) is still solid, or whether things have moved on too
much. I can't devote an enormous amount of capital to this, but I
still want to be solidly based (like a lot of others in a similar
situation, I would guess.)
1. Monitors: Calibrate about monthly. Currently using WiziWYG, but
have tried the demo of Optical. Still no hardware calibrator,
planning to buy a Spyder combo soon, based on list info.
2. Printer: Epson 1520, profiled with WiziWYG. Printing through
PressReady with (hacked-in) custom CMYK profiles. Set to AdobeRGB for
RGB and US Sheetfed Coated for CMYK. (Switch to Web Coated as
necessary.) A suitable "low-cost" profile editor would be helpful, if
such a beast exists... any suggestions?
3. PDFs for clients review: Acrobat 4 through Adobe CreatePDF, using
RGB, 144dpi settings. Downsampling to 300dpi (though this seems
contradictory to me), all fonts embedded. (Since most clients are
only to Acro 4 software at this time.)
4. Page Layout: QuarkXPress 4.11, color management OFF. (Most design
jobs use this. Occasionally print directly from Illustrator 9 or
Photoshop 6. Suggestions on Illustrator color management also
welcome... still through PressReady as main driver.)
5. Scans: into Adobe RGB w.s. with aging Umax 630 scanner, to be
replaced soon by a wider-bit model. (Mostly for position scans; "good
stuff" comes from outside, from PhotoCDs, or from stock image CDs).
Suggestions for lower-end flatbeds that are competent and
ICC-friendly are welcome!
Also in the process of converting walls to neutral gray and lighting
to at least 50000K tubes, though I'm looking at the OTT line as
alternative.
Does this sound like reasonable workflow to you-all?
Thanks in advance.
George
