A PDF file with overprinting elements and traps (e.g. from Heidleberg's
SuperTrap plug-in) in it can
- be viewed correctly in Acrobat 5 on screen (overprints and traps will
be simulated)
- be printed out correctly on just about any clor printer if you turn on
preview overprints (or whatever that check box is actually called in the
advanced printing options).
Using Acrobat 5 and PDF files you are all set at a price of 249 US
dollars, which I find pretty reasonably priced...

PS: Even if you shy away from using Acrobat 5 today for production
because it was just released and nobody knows about production related
problems with it yet it is still a very useful tool for visual
preflighting (on screen and on any color printer) to justify its use
already for that.
