Illustrator 8 with ColorSync

>From previous experience with Illustrator 8, I know that 8 uses profiles to manage color on-screen only. Has anyone successfully used ColorSync with Illustrator 8 when trying to correct or change color output on their printer?

My main issue is that regardless of the output profile I select, the colors do not change in the final output. CMYK or RGB data makes no difference. Anyone go though the same thing? (OS 9.0.4, AdobePS 8.7.2, ColorSync 3.0, output device set to Direct--Printer's internal CMM off)
