Scanner Profiling Argument

Fixed vs Dynamic end-points:

I have been profiling scanners for years using fixed end-points. I have had
very good results matching the originals when using these profiles. I
regularly encounter those who suggest that I should be profiling with
end-points automatically set by the scanner software. Of course all
subsequent scans would also have automatically set end points as well. The
argument is that this assures a better dynamic range for each image.

How can my profile be valid, if the end points are always moving?

Which approach is better? Why?

Thanks,
