On the other hand, since it's a built-in hardware feature (at least the
measuring), it makes the most sense to build it as future-proof as possible.
Then what if in the future they release an hexachrome inkset, for example?
They would need the 5th and 6th channels to be linearized separately.
Maybe that's a reason for doing so from the start.
