Yes , as noted before , this seems to be a problem with the Nvidia drivers.
You'll have to start up off the CD applications (NOT the restore disc) and
delete the Nvidia's and reinstall using the custom installation option or
using Tome viewer to extract the necessary drivers. Also I found that if
calibrated to gamma 1.8 the boxed cursor went away, but was present with any
other setting. After the driver re-install I've no longer this problem.
Can't say for MacOsX as I don't use it.
