I can think of a bunch of reasons why NOT to scan directly to CMYK but
probably the only compelling reason to scan directly to CMYK is
productivity. Even if adding automation to the RGB->CMYK process, it won't
be faster than coming off the scanner in CMYK from the get-go.
Of course, open the CMYK image in Photoshop for ANY reason whatsoever and
you've pretty much thrown this argument out the window.
I wish I could point him to a few customers of mine that have made the
switch from CMYK scanning off their Hell 3800 scanners to an all-RGB
scanning workflow. They have virtually a 0% rescan rate and are NOT looking
back.
