We normally dump a finger on the shift key before pressing "2", in order
to achieve the result you wanted :-)

Anyway, if it is 36" x 24" prints you want, without scaling the Nikon
would give you less than 85 samples per inch, the Canon about 70.
Referring to the words "Fine Art" in the original subject line, I would
personally venture that this is unacceptably scant information for a
print of that size using any likely process, especially if you plan to
sell the print! On a Roland HiFi or an Epson 9500, both of which I drive
at their 720 x 720 dpi printing resolution for this stuff, my ideal
input resolution is around 250 samples per inch, and depending on the
nature of the original I would be willing to compromise down no further
than 150. You'll need to buy a more expensive medium format digital
camera back or use film. Others may disagree...
