I really do not understand how this thread has continued for so long, or why
it keeps popping up in different places. Calibration is calibration and
profiling is profiling. One does not exclude the other, they are
complementary and necessary - 1. calibrate 2. then profile . Take the
monitor for example. First the monitor is calibrated and then it is
profiled. You do not leave the monitor as is and then use the profile to
adjust for color cast. If you make a profile of an offset press, you would
not tell the prepress guys that they no longer need to calibrate the
imagesetter or platesetter - "Don't worry if your dot at 80% is filming at
95% because I will fix it with the profile TAC and a nifty grey balance
tweak in the profile editor." The fact that the output is inkjet does not
change the basic fact that first the device needs to be linearized so that
it is functioning in the most optimum of conditions, and then make a profile
for it. The fact that many RIPs incorrectly do not let you calibrate them
properly does not mean that it is not necessary, or that it really should be
done elsewhere. If you need quality prints, look for a RIP which lets you
linearize - BTW, there is at least one which allows you to set the black
generation as well.
