As Henrik pointed out what you are describing as defined in the ICC
specification is a device link profile. And few devices actually are
set up to use them. A couple of exceptions are Phaser printers from Xerox
(the former Tektronix division). [Disclaimer: I have done some work for
them in the past.] They have an application that will create a DLP and
download it to the printer for proofing emulations.
But another interesting variant of a child profile would be one that was
implied by someone's ("Michael S. Dodds"?) description of doing two convert
to profile actions in Photoshop. You should end up with a single printer
profile that converts the PCS to the CMYK values of the target press as
produced by the emulated printer. If not done in Photoshop it certainly
is possible to do the matrix multiplication --- with suitable adjustment for
gamut mapping --- and produce such a profile. Yes?
It seems to violate the intent of the ICC spec if not the letter of it.
But would it work? I think the answer is 'yes' though I haven't tried
it yet.
