Hey color geeks!
Spent some more time with the HP 10PS printer at the customer site last
week. Problems indicated earlier with extremely sluggish performance from
application Print command to final output have been worked out a bit.
Problem lies with spooling that takes a long time. First if you print to
the background the postscript file is spooled to the desktop printer. Once
spooling is completed then the postscript file is transferred to the HP
(Scanvec Amiable) RIP starts RIPing the file. Finally after RIPing the file
printing begins.
I got around all this spooling (cutting down print output time almost in
half) by creating a PDF and dropping it directly into the RIP. Yeah you
still have to RIP the file and then printing will start (no RIP/print at the
same time) but it is a heck of lot faster. HP RIP is Postscript 3 compatible
so PDF support is not a problem.
The best way at this point is to use a Win NT or 200 box instead of Mac.
NT/2000 are multitasking so you *can* RIP and print concurrently which is a
big performance boost. Once ScanVec Amiable updates their software to Mac OS
X we will enjoy the benefits of multitasking on the Mac.
