flatbed scanner recommendation?

In our digital photo lab, we have a Microtek A4 flatbed scanner as
specified by Fujifilm for their Digital Imaging workstation
configuration to go with the Frontier lab. Its performance is pretty
dismal, and a number of AGFA Duoscan devices we employ in the large
format printer area don't seem to do an awful lot better. In prepress we
use a couple of Eversmart Pros but that is not a viable proposition for
the photo lab, either economically or operationally.

Considering that its main job will be to scan photographic prints
customers bring in, can anybody recommend a reasonable quality flatbed
scanner, A4 size or thereabouts, and not exceeding the order of
magnitude of, say, $ 5,000? Off-list will be fine! ICC-aware scanner
software would definitely be a good plus...
