No, in fact I think we agree here.
We cannot achieve perfection in camera profiling, not nearly as much
perfection as we would achieve in a good scanner profile anyway, so we have
to use our aesthetic judgment to make the best of it.
That's exactly my point!
Talking about practice: I myself developed software that takes some of the
problems involved in lighting into account, while changing colours in a
photo. I took a patent for it, and my current clients are very happy with
it. It will be marketed internationally shortly.
btw: It would be interesting to speculate on another, better way of
'profiling' a camera. A way that takes the idiosyncrasies of human vision
into account.
